Five novels by Steinunn Sigurðardóttir now in paperback in German

29.3.2010

A German translation of Sólskinshestur (Sun Horse) by Steinunn Sigurðardóttir (who celebrated her fortieth year as writer last year) was published in paperback by Rowohlt last month. This is the fifth of Sigurðardóttir's novels to be published in paperback in Germany, an achievement matched by few other Icelandic writers.

The book was received extremely well by both readers and critics when it was published in Iceland in 2005, and it seems to meet with no less approval by eager readers in Germany. Suddeutsche Zeitung  praised Sigurðardóttir for masterly irony, and Antje Deistler, critic at the radio station WDR2, was unstinting in her praise, saying the novel was one of the most beautiful and inspired books she had ever read.

Other books by Sigurðardóttir that have been published in German are Jöklaleikhúsið (The Glacier Theatre), Hjartastaður (Heart's Place), Ástin fiskanna (Fish Love), and Tímaþjófurinn (The Thief of Time) all in Coletta Burling's translation. A sixth is expected before the 2011 Frankfurt Book Fair.
