The women's literary prizes Fjöruverðlaun were awarded recently for the fourth consecutive year. Four authors received awards on this occasion, for books published in 2009.
In the Literature category, poet Ingunn Snædal won the prize for her book Komin til að vera, nóttin/Here to Stay, Night (publisher Bjartur). Þórdís Elva Þorvaldsdóttir was awarded the prize in the Academic category for her book on sexual abuse, Á mannamáli/In Everyday Language (publisher JPV). In the category Books for Children and Young Readers, awards went to Arngrímur apaskott og fiðlan/Arngrímur the Monkey and his Fiddle by Kristín Arngrímsdóttir (publisher Salka) and Aþena (ekki höfuðborgin í Grikklandi)/Athena not Athens by Margrét Örnólfsdóttir (publisher Bjartur).
The Fjöruverðlaun prize is awarded by the Góa group, a grassroots group of women within the Writers' Union and Hagþenkir, the Society of Academic Writers. The prize was established in 2007 to strengthen the position of Icelandic women writers, and promote solidarity among them.
